Brown or black spots that pop up on your skin are often called pigmented lesions and they include moles, age (or liver) spots, and sun damaged skin. Pigmented lesions are extremely common. They appear during childhood or adulthood. The overwhelming majority are benign, or non-cancerous, lesions. It is rare, but others have a high risk of developing into melanoma.
